EV maintenance in Canada: what still needs service
No oil changes does not mean no service. Tire rotation, cabin filters, brake fluid checks, winter caliper care, and the 12V battery - with manufacturer examples and Canadian cost context.
The big mindset shift
A gas car trains you to expect a recurring dealer “service call” for oil and filters. Battery-electric cars skip oil, spark plugs, exhaust, and multi-gear transmission fluid changes. What remains is mostly tires, brakes, cabin air, wipers, coolant/thermal checks where required, and the 12V auxiliary battery.
That is why new owners sometimes feel like “nothing happens” after delivery - until winter tires, a cabin filter, or a 12V failure shows up. Your brand's booklet (or in-car maintenance screen) is the source of truth for intervals.
Example intervals (one brand, clearly labeled)

Tesla also lists daily / weekly / monthly owner checks (charge level, tire pressure, lights, washer fluid, unexpected alerts). Software updates should be installed promptly.

Other brands still book calendar visits
Not every OEM mirrors Tesla's as-needed model. Mazda's Canadian MX-30 EV maintenance brochure states the vehicle must be serviced every 12 months or 16,000 km, whichever comes first, even though there is no engine oil change. Hyundai / Kia schedules similarly publish timed inspections for brake fluid, 12V battery condition, and coolant on defined kilometre intervals.
Practical takeaway: if your brand gives you a maintenance booklet with annual stamps, follow it for warranty record-keeping - even when the visit is inspection-heavy rather than “oil + filter.”

Winter / road-salt note (important in Canada)
Because regenerative braking uses the friction brakes less, pads and rotors can corrode when roads are salted. Several manufacturers call this out; Tesla specifically publishes annual (or 20,000 km) caliper cleaning in salted regions and recommends occasionally using the brake pedal firmly so mechanical brakes dry the pads and rotors.

- High-voltage orange cables, battery packs, or contactors
- Opening the battery coolant reservoir on sealed systems (Tesla warns this can void related warranty coverage)
- Casual brake-fluid top-ups when the manufacturer says not to
