Used EVs do not qualify for federal EVAP. Manitoba and PEI still pay provincially on some used purchases. Steep depreciation is bad news for sellers and good news for buyers - if you check battery health, recalls, charging, and insurance first.

The battery is probably fine - check anyway
Geotab's 2026 update of 22,700+ real-world EVs found batteries now degrade about 2.3% per year (up from 1.8% in 2024), retaining roughly 81.6% capacity after 8 years - comfortably above the 70% threshold most warranties guarantee. Heavy reliance on >100kW DC fast charging is the biggest controllable risk factor. Very few owners ever pay for a replacement out of pocket.

The 8-point checklist
1. Confirm the exact trim, not just the model
Battery size, charging speed, and even EVAP eligibility can differ by trim year to year - a used listing's model name alone doesn't tell you the specs.
2. Get a battery health report if the manufacturer offers one
Not every brand publishes one, but where available it's the single most useful used-EV data point - far more informative than odometer alone.
3. Check for open recalls

4. Test both AC (Level 1/2) and DC fast charging
A vehicle can charge fine at home and still have a degraded DC fast-charge curve (or vice versa) - test both if you can before buying.
5. Inspect the charge port and included cables/adapters
Replacement cables and adapters aren't cheap, and a damaged charge port is an expensive repair - confirm what's actually included in the sale.
6. Check tire and brake wear specifically
EV tires wear roughly 20% faster than gas vehicles - a used EV with worn tires needs that cost factored into your offer immediately.
7. Confirm software/account transfer
Some manufacturers tie premium features or connected services to the original owner's account - ask what transfers and what doesn't before you buy.
8. Get an insurance quote before you commit
EVs average 36.8% more to insure than gas vehicles in Canada ($3,131 vs $2,289/year) - premiums vary widely by model, so quote the specific trim, not a general EV estimate.
