This uses a simplified straight-line model for energy, maintenance, and insurance. It excludes depreciation, resale value, and financing interest - depreciation especially matters if you plan to sell within five years. Confirm rebate eligibility with the EVAP program before purchase.
See all sourced data →How is the Mach-E vs. RAV4 Hybrid number calculated?
The homepage snapshot and this calculator's defaults compare two real, current-generation vehicles as a realistic first-EV-vs-status-quo matchup: a Ford Mustang Mach-E Select (BEV, $46,590 MSRP + $2,995 freight/PDI, EVAP-eligible) against a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid LE AWD (HEV, $37,500 MSRP + $1,930 freight/PDI, not EVAP-eligible - the rebate only covers battery-electric, hydrogen, and plug-in hybrid vehicles, not conventional hybrids).
- Net purchase price = MSRP − federal EVAP rebate ($5,000 for the Mach-E) − any dealer incentive you enter. The gas car uses its own price minus any discount you negotiate. Sales tax (HST/GST/PST) and financing interest are not included on either side.
- Energy cost - EV: the Mach-E Select's 15.1 kWh/100 km × the blended Ontario Ultra-Low-Overnight rate (≈5.36¢/kWh today, weighted 80% overnight + 10% weekend off-peak + 10% mid-peak) ÷ 100 = $0.81/100 km. Gas: RAV4 Hybrid's official 5.7 L/100 km × the Ontario average pump price of $1.80/L = $10.25/100 km. Both figures are computed live from each vehicle's catalogue spec, so they track current rates automatically - selecting a different preset above recalculates them for that vehicle instead.
- Maintenance & insurance are flat annual estimates (CAA-sourced ~45-55% EV maintenance savings; Surex national average insurance premiums), applied monthly.
- The model starts each vehicle at its net purchase price, then adds (distance ÷ 100 × energy cost) + monthly maintenance + monthly insurance every month for 10 years at 20,000 km/yr. Break-even is the first month the EV's running total drops to or below the gas car's.
