CAA drove 14 EVs in freezing conditions until they stopped. Range versus official ratings fell 14–39%. Gas cars also lose about 15% in the cold - the best EVs in that test matched them.

What CAA actually measured

CAA's large-scale Canadian winter test drove 14 EVs in freezing conditions until they died. Range loss versus official NRCan ratings ranged from 14% to 39%. For context, gas engines also lose roughly 15% efficiency in cold weather - so the best-performing EVs matched gas cars.

We do not republish CAA's per-model percentages as if they were our own tests. The band above is the sourced result. Heat pumps, battery preconditioning, highway versus city driving, and cabin heat all move a given car along that 1439% range. We do not have a sourced heat-pump flag on every catalogue trim.

Owner reports versus the lab

Over 65% of Canadian EV owners polled reported noticeably lower range in extreme cold. CAA testing measured 14–39% below official ratings depending on the model.

Threads on r/EVCanada often cite closer to 50% in prairie deep-freeze highway driving. That is a useful planning anecdote, not a second CAA result. If your commute is highway-only at −30 °C, plan toward the worse end of the band and keep a 20–30% arrival buffer.

What helps: Precondition the cabin while plugged in, use seat heaters over cabin heat, and plan winter trips with a 30% buffer. Heat-pump-equipped models fare better.
