Nova Scotia, from 1 October 2026
Battery-electric owners pay $500 on top of the vehicle permit fee. Plug-in hybrid owners pay $250. Permits renew every two years, so that is about $250 and $125 a year. Gas hybrids are exempt. HST is not charged on the levy.
It covers passenger vehicles, light trucks, and vans. Municipal, fire, and police vehicles are exempt. Sell the car during the two-year permit and part of the levy can be refunded with the registration fee. The charge was in the 2026-27 budget and was approved in April. The 25 September 2026 release set the 1 October start.
Already charging: Alberta and Saskatchewan
Alberta charges $200 a year on battery-electric vehicles at registration or renewal. Hybrids are exempt. There is still no provincial purchase rebate. Alberta rebate page.
Saskatchewan charges $300 a year on Class LV electric vehicles through 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027 that amount is indexed to national inflation. The provincial page does not publish a plug-in hybrid rate. SGI collects it at registration and prorates a shorter term.
Quebec, the day after the rebate ends
Roulez vert's 2026 purchase amounts end 31 December 2026. On 1 January 2027 Quebec adds $125 a year for a fully electric or fuel-cell car and $62.50 for a plug-in hybrid car. Later years are indexed. The fee is collected with registration.
