Permit: Technical Safety BC

Technical Safety BC (the provincial safety authority) requires a permit and inspection for the 240V circuit an EV charger needs, similar in structure to Ontario's ESA process but administered provincially rather than through a single authority brand name shared with Ontario.

What drives the cost

General scenarios - your total lands within British Columbia's $2,000–$4,000 range depending on which applies.

Basic (near panel, with ESA)
Short run from panel, spare capacity. Labour alone is often $700-$800; ESA certificate brings the all-in total to about $1,000-$1,100. Electricians will ask how far the charger is from the panel before quoting.

Rebate: BC Hydro EV charger rebate

BC Hydro offers up to $350 toward the purchase and installation of a qualifying Level 2 home charger. The charger must be on BC Hydro's approved equipment list and the installation must be permitted and inspected by Technical Safety BC. Strata (condo) buildings have a separate, larger rebate path for shared charging infrastructure.
