NACS vs CCS charging in Canada

NACS is SAE J3400 (Tesla’s plug). CCS1 is still common on public DC sites. On mixed road trips, carry the adapter that matches the other network - DC adapters are not for home Level 2.

What NACS and CCS actually are

NACS is Tesla's North American Charging Standard. Volvo Canada (and SAE) also call it SAE J3400. One plug handles Tesla AC and Tesla Supercharger DC.

CCS1 (Combined Charging System) is the DC combo plug most non-Tesla EVs in Canada shipped with for years: a J1772 AC inlet plus two extra DC pins. Electrify Canada, Ivy, many Petro-Canada Electric Highway stalls, and a lot of FLO DC still present CCS1.

CHAdeMO remains on some older Leafs and a shrinking set of public stalls. Do not plan a Toronto–Montreal trip around it.

Can a CCS car use a Tesla Supercharger?

Often yes, at Superchargers Tesla has opened to other brands - with a DC NACS-to-CCS1 adapter and an account in the Tesla app (or the automaker's app, where that path exists). Tesla documents this under Supercharging other EVs. Mercedes-Benz Canada and Volvo Canada both sell approved DC adapters and warn, in bold, do not use them on Level 1 or Level 2 AC, including a home wallbox.

Tesla sells a CCS Combo 1 adapter in the Canadian shop. Several automakers tell you to use their approved adapter if you want warranty backing. That is the one to buy, not a random marketplace listing.

Can a NACS car use Electrify Canada?

A native NACS car needs a NACS-to-CCS1 DC adapter (or a stall that already presents NACS) to use many CCS-only DC sites. The mixed map is the real 2026 story: new hardware is trending J3400; existing CCS1 sites are not disappearing this year. Carry the adapter that matches the other network on a road trip.

J1772 (AC) is still the common public Level 2 plug. A Tesla with a J1772 adapter covers a lot of destination chargers; that adapter is not a Supercharger adapter.

What to pack for a mixed trip

  • The DC adapter your automaker or Tesla actually lists for your VIN
  • Network apps already signed in (Tesla, Electrify Canada, FLO, Ivy)
  • A plan B stall 20 km off the same highway - see Toronto to Montreal charging
  • Cost context: public DC is often an order of magnitude above home overnight. Public charging costs.
