EV insurance in Canada: why quotes run higher
National broker averages put EV premiums about 36.8% above gas cars - $3,131 versus $2,289 a year. That gap is real in the calculator. It is not a quote for your postal code.

What the average actually is
National average across quoted premiums. Some luxury/comparable-trim EVs can insure cheaper than an equivalent gas model - this is a general market average, not a per-model guarantee.
Our cost calculator defaults to these Surex national figures so the 10-year total is not missing a large line item. Drag the insurance sliders to your own broker quotes - Teslas, ADAS-heavy crossovers, and urban postal codes move the number more than the national average implies.
Why EV quotes run higher
Brokers and collision-repair reporting typically point to three cost drivers:
- Parts and body repair. Battery packs, sensors, and branded panels take longer to source. Labour rates at EV-capable shops are higher in many cities.
- ADAS recalibration. Cameras and radar after a windshield or bumper job add a shop line that gas cars of the same age often skip.
- Repair network concentration. Fewer certified shops can mean longer rentals and higher claimed severity, which feeds premiums.
None of that is a sourced per-model table - treat it as the industry explanation sitting behind the Surex average, not a prediction for a Hyundai Kona versus a Model Y.
