Grizzl-E, SWTCH, and Ontario charger kWh kickbacks

These are private Clean Fuel Regulations carbon-credit payouts, not a government charger rebate. Grizzl-E Club publishes 3–10¢/kWh tiers; SWTCH starts at 3¢ and rises after 1,500 kWh.

Why Reddit calls it a kickback

Under Canada's Clean Fuel Regulations, fossil-fuel suppliers that cannot cut emissions enough must buy credits from things that can - including verified home EV charging. Grizzl-E, SWTCH, and Pion Power sit in the middle: they meter your kWh, sell or retire the credits, and share some of that value with you.

That is why the money is quoted in ¢/kWh, not as a one-time government cheque. It is also why the charger usually has to stay online. Compare that with actual purchase incentives on Ontario EV rebates (federal EVAP only) and ESA install costs.

Grizzl-E Club (made in Ontario)

United Chargers builds Grizzl-E in Ontario. Club membership has no monthly fee. You can convert an existing connected Grizzl-E or take a program charger; the site says the deposit is refunded after the first online charging session.

The published Essentials ladder (13 Sep 2026) starts at 3¢/kWh and steps up with lifetime kWh to 10¢/kWh at 35,000 kWh. Premium Club reaches 10¢ sooner. The marketing homepage also advertises a rate increase from 1 October 2026 - treat that as a promotion, not a guaranteed forever tariff.

SWTCH Home Charging

SWTCH's current offer (13 Sep 2026): a Level 2 charger with a $300 deposit refunded after 1,500 kWh, plus 3¢/kWh from day one, then 11¢/kWh after that threshold. Payouts are direct deposit in $100 increments. Installation is yours - a NEMA 14-50 plug or a licensed electrician. Chargers shipped before May 2026 may need a firmware update to derate to 24A.

A CAA Atlantic extra 1¢/kWh is a separate promo on the same page. Ontario ESA notification still applies if an electrician is running a new 240V circuit.

Pion Power GreenMiles

GreenMiles advertises about 10¢/kWh ($100 per 1,000 kWh) on eligible Flex-AC chargers, with no membership deposit. Payout is typically once a year (redemption in January, cheque around March). Pion says the ¢/kWh figure is an estimate tied to carbon-credit markets and can move.

What this does not replace

  • Overnight electricity. Ontario ULO at 3.9¢/kWh is still the cheap electron - ULO math. A 10¢ kickback does not make 39.1¢ peak charging a good idea.
  • A permitted install. Kickback terms do not override ESA or your insurer.
  • Tax advice. Some programs note payouts may be taxable. Ask an accountant, not a forum thread.
