Tesla winter brake care on salted Canadian roads

Tesla's Model Y maintenance schedule (en_CA) recommends: clean brake calipers every year or every 20,000 km (12,500 miles) if you are in an area where roads are salted during winter.

That covers most of Ontario, Quebec, the Maritimes, and prairie cities that brine or salt heavily. If you only summer-drive in a salt-free region, this interval may not apply the same way - but many Canadian Tesla owners should treat annual caliper service as default.

Tesla's road-salt tech note (TN-19-33-004) explains the physics: EVs rely heavily on regenerative braking, so friction brake assemblies are used less and produce less heat. Moisture and water take longer to dry off the pads and rotors. Prolonged exposure to salt and mud corrodes brake components and accelerates wear.

After wet, muddy, or corrosive conditions, Tesla says the vehicle should be washed of dirt and salt - especially wheels, brakes, suspension, and underbody - then driven cautiously with several firm brake applications to dry the pads and rotors.
