Toronto to Montreal EV charging along the 401
The usual 401 / Autoroute 20 drive is about 540 km. A ~480 km official-range EV typically needs one DC stop in mild weather; CAA’s winter band can add another. Plan Kingston or Brockville as a midpoint.
How far is it, really?
Google Maps' usual 401 / A-20 routing is about 540 km and a bit over five hours of driving before any charge stop. That is corridor driving, not downtown-to-downtown wandering. Add construction, snow, and a hungry kid and the clock moves more than the kilometres.
Stops from official range, not vibes
A 20% arrival buffer on a 540 km drive means you want roughly 675 km of usable range in one gulp, or a DC stop. Catalogue examples:

In mild weather, a ~480 km official-range car (Ioniq 5, Mach-E Select) typically needs one DC stop if you start near 100% and want a buffer into Montreal. The Leaf S at 341 km official needs that stop for sure, and in CAA's high winter band it can need a second. Details: EV winter range.
Where people actually plug in
Kingston is the practical midpoint (~265 km from Toronto). Electrify Canada lists DC fast charging on this corridor, including Kingston and Brockville. Tesla Superchargers sit in the same towns - native NACS cars use them directly; CCS cars need a DC adapter and an open stall. See NACS vs CCS.
Have a backup 15 minutes off the 401. One busy 350 kW row in a snow squall is why you packed FLO / Ivy / Petro-Canada as apps, not as a lifestyle.
What the stop costs
Home overnight on Ontario ULO is a few dollars per 100 km. Public DC is the road-trip tax. Ivy's published DC rate in our table is $0.69/kWh; Tesla Supercharging for non-Teslas has run as high as $0.72/kWh peak. Converted math lives on public charging costs.
One 20–30 minute 10–80% session is usually a coffee, not a second job - unless the stall is down. Check live status before you commit to a 12% arrival.
