What “battery care” actually means day to day
Traction batteries are warrantied for a long time (commonly around 8 years / 160,000 km to a capacity threshold near 70%), and real-world packs usually age gradually - not cliff-edge failures. Geotab's large fleet study (22,700+ vehicles in the update we cite on-site) found roughly 2.3% average annual degradation, retaining about 81.6% capacity after 8 years.

Simple habits that help (Toyota’s first-owner framing)
Toyota Canada's 2026 first-time EV owner guidance lines up with what most modern BEVs recommend in-car:
- Keep routine charge between about 10% and 80%. Avoid living at 100% unless you need the range for a trip.
- Charge to 100% when you need it - then drive. Sitting for long periods at a full pack is what to avoid, not the occasional full charge before a highway run.
- Prefer Level 1 / Level 2 for daily charging. DC fast charging is fine for travel; making it your everyday habit adds heat stress over time. Toyota even notes model-year limits on how many DCFC sessions some 2026 vehicles allow per 24 hours - always check your manual.
- Precondition before DC fast charging in the cold when your car supports it - the pack accepts power faster when warm.
- Smooth driving and proper tire pressure reduce energy waste and help you need fewer public top-ups.
Myths worth dropping
- “Never use DC fast charging.” False. Use it for trips; just don't make every grocery run a 150 kW session if you have home charging.
- “You must drain to 0% regularly.” False for modern lithium packs - deep routine drains are unnecessary.

Home charging is still the main lever
